everyday food

i don't watch a lot of television, but i do watch a lot of cooking shows on pbs. there is a show called "everyday food" that is somehow affiliated with martha stewart. it is terrible. i don't like the way it's shot, i don't like the cooks on this show, i don't really like much about it.

there are 5 women who are always on the show, and they all talk so weirdly. the way martha annunciates, except it's not her. for martha, that way of speaking seems natural, and i think it's because of her age and her deeper voice. for these other women, who range probably between 30 and 45, the way they say words is clearly more contemporary. so when they try to say "i LOVE the way the herbs bring out the flavor," it simply sounds unnatural.

And then they try to film the food being cooked or assembled in this slow-motion way, but instead of doing that, they just have people do things unnaturally slow. Like there was one part where the host was trying to scoop very small dollops of sour cream onto potato chips, and you know how sour cream doesn't just slide off the spoon and you have to kind of shake it? well, at one point, the woman was shaking the spoon so vigorously, it was totally inconsistent with the "soft, slow" cinematography from earlier in the sequence.

that show and ciao italia need to be cancelled. yuck.

Hmm. Haven't seen the show, but for a while I was getting the small mag. I rather liked the recipes. All were realistic for weekday meals and most actually tasted pretty good. Wasn't MARTHA-ized much at all now that I think about it. Maybe that's why it worked.
