More Farm Days

Seems like I visit farms a lot, doesn't it? With all the crazy in DC, I feel like it's a good way to relax. Two weekends ago, I went to Swoope, VA to visit Polyface Farms with Tina and Michael. As we were getting close to Polyface, we drove past a farm auction--another farm gone bust. The road was lined with GM and Ford pick-ups. Our car was the only compact car around.

When we got to Polyface, we saw a big group of people who looked like college students. We found out that they are Truman Scholars, and the Truman Foundation was taking them on a Joel Salatin-led tour of Polyface. Tina, Michael and I had expected to simply go on a self-guided tour, but we were so lucky and the head of the Truman Scholars group said we could tag along on their tour.

Joel's talk was so fascinating, but unfortunately, my camera ran out of batteries. Here are the few pictures I got:

This is a picture of where the younger pigs live before they go out to the Pig-erator. The Pig-erator was so cool because Joel literally went and picked up a pile of pig bedding and brought it over for us to smell, and it smelled exactly like compost. Amazing.

This is another picture of the cows--or the grass farm.

This is a picture of Joel and one of the dogs, Jack.

Here's a picture of Jack and Faith, the two guard dogs.
