Farm Day

when I first moved out to the East Coast, I had just completed an intensive one month-long road trip from the West to the East. I had visited several major national parks - Mt. Rainier, Crater Lake, Redwood, Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Teton - and after I'd settled in here in Washington, DC, I decided to go to Great Falls National Park. I think it was an overcast fall day. Overcast in late fall out east is not quite as nice as out west - gray and brown. This really ruined my perception of what I could do out here in terms of nature.

But in the last 2 1/2 years, I have discovered a lot of amazing things to see. Just because it's not the same dramatic landscape as one expects in the pacific nw, doesn't mean there's nothing to do.

Recently, michael and i visited bear garden alpaca farm and we also went to great country farms, where i get my weekly farm share.

The owners of bear gardens were so kind to us. We hadn't made an appointment, and just drove by, and they saw us admiring their alpacas from the road, and welcomed us in. i got really excited when i saw that they have a couple great pyrenees. They are my favorite type of dog! they are so big and so friendly...maybe one day i'll be able to raise one, but definitely not while i'm living in a one bedroom apartment.

right before we arrived, one of the alpacas had just given birth. above is a picture of an alpaca mother with a couple of relatively newborn babies. they were absolutely adorable.

they also sell alpaca yarn at the farm, so of course i couldn't resist buying a couple skeins. one of the really nice things about the yarn i bought is that along with all the standard information on the yarn itself, they include the name of the alpaca from which the yarn came.

at great country farms, we didn't actually pick anything. we just looked around. maybe next time i go out, i'll actually go and pick something! but we did get to see miniature horses...
